I am reading Proverbs 10-30 all from The Message, and here is what I took from Chapter 13...
1. Verse 3 "Careful words make for a careful life; careless talk may ruin everything."
2. Verse 7 "A pretentious, showy life is an empty life; a plain and simple life is a full life."
3. Verse 13 "Ignore the word and suffer; honor God's commands and grow rich."
4. Verse 20 "Become wise by walking with the wise; hang out with fools and watch your life fall to pieces."
5. Verse 24 "A refusal to correct is a refusal to love; love your children by disciplining them."
I still have a hard time just picking a few that really stand out to me. I love the way Solomon wrote this, it's like little bits of random advice thrown from here and there, but all so applicable, even thousands of years later!

I'm loving reading Proverbs with you! Some of my favorites from today would be verse 3:"He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin." And I liked verse 10: "Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice." I'm really learning to watch what I say and how I say it and to always take the advice of the older and the wiser.
I realized tonight that I forgot to read the past couple of days, so I got caught up tonight. I like the one about discipline equaling love. I know kids whose parents don't discipline them and I believe they act out because they truly want discipline and someone to just love them enough to care what they're doing wrong.
My favs of ch 13...
1 Intelligent children listen to their parents; foolish children do their own thing.
6 A God-loyal life keeps you on track; sin dumps the wicked in the ditch.
7 A pretentious, showy life is an empty life; a plain and simple life is a full life.
15 Sound thinking makes for gracious living, but liars walk a rough road.
24 A refusal to correct is a refusal to love; love your children by disciplining them.
